Tomáš Danielis: 21&counting

"21&counting" is a performance where communication and a perception of reality are the main themes. Based on ironic pretext - delayed celebratory performance of 20th anniversary on stage in which dancer is picking in his memories and putting dance and movement as medium to talk about the words and communication, "21&counting" humorously explores the use of political correctness and euphemisms as escape routes from reality, thus heralding contemporary problems with acceptation of people, their surroundings and underlying lack of trust in values during human encounters.

The following performance review was generated within the project Dance Season 2018/2019 - a Slovak nationwide project of analyzes of contemporary dance performances and discussions, which was supported using public funding by Slovak Arts Council.

The repetition of dance life of Danielis, a performance on how to read a contemporary dance, on what is important in the process of interpretation, questioning the extent to which is context and common knowledge necessary for me to decipher the performance. Tracing movements and figures, Danielis recapitulates his dance career – selecting and isolating certain moments – in order to allow context and de-contextualization to play a role in the performance. By reconstructing the material, Danielis also raises a question of what actually remains in the memory of the original work during the reconstruction, what can be conveyed?
